Back on the mainland, a trip to San Francisco in San Francisco is worth a detour to Fort Mason, a famous cultural center. Route 49 leads from here directly to the Golden Gate Bridge, whose gigantic extent is only really a conscious one at the crossing. Rent a car in San Francisco and drive along the rugged coastline. You will be rewarded with a unique view of the clear waters of the Pacific.
