Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in southern Africa, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean between Angola and South Africa. The Caprivi Strip, a narrow strip of land between Botswana in the south and Angola and Zambia to the north belongs to Namibia. To the north are the rivers Kunene, Okavango and Zambesi natural borders with Angola and Zambia in the south of the Orange River, the border with South Africa. In the north east is the 21st Meridian and in the southeast to the 20th longitude to the border with Botswana.
The official language is English since 1990. Prior to independence there were also Afrikaans and German official languages. SWAPO decided to choose only one official language, as opposed to Namibië’s neighbors. The intention was to get less fragmentation of the country. In education, we see that it is provided in non-English teaching languages.
African plays in the country is still an important role as a traffic language that can use people from different communities together. Especially the older population was increased still under the apartheid has a good knowledge of Afrikaans and often limited English language skills.
The local variant of the English is called Namlish and the local variant of the African African-Namibian.
Although English is the official language, Namibia has only 1.9 percent of the people who speak English as a mother tongue. Nearly half of the population, 48.5% speaks Oshiwambo speakers. The Kavangotalen, RuKwangali, Diriku and Mbukushu, 9.7% of the mother tongue used population. In Afrikaans it was 11.4%, with 7.9% Herero and Tswana 0.3%. The Khoisan languages consist of Khoekhoegowab 11.5% of the population and include the Ju /, hoan 1.2%. The remaining five percent of the population speaks Lozi, Portuguese or another language.
Namibia is an area of 824 268 km², the 34th largest country in the world. It has 3824 km of the border, of which 1,376 km with Angola, Botswana 1360 km, 855 km South Africa and Zambia 233 km. Also has a coastline at the Atlantic Ocean 1572 km. Namibia is the country with the lowest rainfall in sub-Saharan Africa.
